Mbeumo, Wissa continue to shine for Brentford in Toney’s absence

Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa both found the back of the net as Brentford opened their 2023-24 Premier League season with a 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

The Bees continue life without talisman Ivan Toney who is currently serving an eight-month ban for breaching FA betting regulations.

In his absence since May, Mbuemo and Wissa have delivered the goals. Brentford however fell behind on their turf against Spurs when Cristian Romero’s head connected with James Maddison’s free kick in the 11th minute.

Brentford equalised 13 minutes later with Mbeumo converting from the penalty spot. It was the Cameroonian’s sixth goal in his last six league appearances since Toney was suspended.

DR Congo forward Wissa made it 2-1 for Brentford in the 36th minute with a fine finish after connecting with Rico Henry’s pass. Tottenham had the last say in added time of the first half as Maddison assisted Brazilian full-back Emerson Royal to level matters at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Brentford will be engaged in another London derby when they tackle Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
