Mbeumo scores first league goal for Man United in narrow win over Burnley

Bryan Mbeumo scored his first Premier League goal for Manchester United in a narrow 3-2 win over newly-promoted Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, Afrosport reports.

The Cameroon forward was on target in the 2-2 draw with Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup second round on midweek while his miss in the penalty shootout condemned the Red Devils to a 12-11 loss.

United started on the front foot against Burnley when Josh Cullen put the ball into his own net in the 27th minute before South Africa forward Lyle Forster equalised for the Clarets in the 55th minute.

Ruben Amorim’s side were however 2-1 up two minutes later when Mbeumo was nicely set up by Diogo Dalot. Burnley leveled again in the 66th minute via Jaidon Anthony but United captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up to net the winner in the 97th minute from the penalty spot.

Mbeumo reacting after the game said: “Yeah, I feel very good. I think today was really important that we could win, and yeah, obviously I’m really happy to score my first goal here.

“We kept going in the game and, at the end, we got the reward.”

Meanwhile, head coach Amorim said of the former Brentford player’s performance: “It was impressive the way he stretched the team.

“The quality that he has in the first touch, and you feel that we are a different team because when we win the ball, we have one guy stretching the team.”

The 13-time Premier League champions will head for the international break and return to face rivals Manchester City in the derby on September 14.

In other Premier League results on Saturday, Chelsea defeated London rivals Fulham 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez (penalty) with the goals.
