Mathys Tel remains positive despite exclusion from Tottenham UCL squad

Mathys Tel: Tottenham forward vows not to allow racist abuse affect him

Mathys Tel remains in positive mood despite being left out of Tottenham Hotspur’s squad for the league phase of the UEFA Champions League, Afrosport reports.

The Frenchman’s omission has cast a doubt over his future in North London having joined permanently from Bayern Munich this summer after a loan spell in the second half of the season.

The 20-year-old is also yet to start a game for Spurs this season and could see further limited time with the arrival of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.

Tel however admitted that his exclusion from the Champions League squad hurt him.

“Quite simply, with respect. He called me, he simply told me his choice, and then you could see the list appear on the networks,” he told Le Telegramme while on international duty with the France U-21 national team.

“It’s clear that when you’re not on a list, it definitely hurts, but I’m someone who stays pretty positive, no matter the situation, because I think I’ve worked a lot on the mental aspect, so today it’s definitely a disappointment. I would have liked to be there.

“But the coach’s choice is the coach’s choice, we can only respect it and we’re going to work to come back in the best possible way.”

Tottenham will begin their Champions League campaign at home to Villarreal next Tuesday but before that will play London rivals West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday.
