Manchester United will be without midfielder Mason Mount for “several weeks” due to a leg injury, head coach Ruben Amorim confirmed on Friday.
Mount, 25, lasted only 14 minutes at the Etihad Stadium as he was forced off during Sunday’s 2-1 Manchester derby win against City.
The England international started just his fourth Premier League game of the season and was visibly emotional as he made his way to the sidelines to be replaced by Kobbie Mainoo.
Following United’s EFL Cup exit after a 4-3 loss at Tottenham on Thursday, Amorim shared an update on the former Chelsea midfielder, saying, “I don’t know the exact date, but it is going to be long.”
Mount joined United in a big-money move from Stamford Bridge in July 2023 and made only five Premier League starts for the Red Devils in his first season.
He was sidelined for about five months last season with thigh and calf injuries and has already missed two months of the current campaign owing to hamstring and head injuries.
“That is not my department,” Amorim stated when asked if Mount was injury prone. “What I can do is help Mase to teach him to play our game while he is recovering, to give him that time to think about different things.
“The worst part is that we don’t have time to train as you should do while recovering with a lot of injuries. We are always travelling, we don’t train enough with the team together. It makes it hard to recover for the games.
“We try to manage it with rotation. With Mason Mount, we are going to help him and it is really hard for him to be out so long. He is trying really hard. If they try hard, we will help them to the end.”
United, 13th in the league standings, will play their seventh game in December when they host sixth-placed Bournemouth, who are just three points above them, on Sunday, 22 December at Old Trafford.
