Mario Lemina stripped of Wolves captaincy

Mario Lemina stripped of Wolves captaincy

Mario Lemina has been stripped of the captaincy at Wolverhampton Wanderers following his altercation in the 2-1 defeat at West Ham United the Monday, Afrosport reports.

The Gabon international clashed with West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen after the final whistle which escalated to him clashing with his Wolves teammates and coaching staff.

Lemina was ultimately escorted off the pitch and offered an apology the following day for his actions.

The consequences of his actions have however seen Wolves manager Gary O’Neil take the armband off him and hand it to Portugal full-back Nelson Semedo.

“We’ve decided to move the captaincy to Nelson and Nelson will captain the group from now on,” O’Neil said BBC Sport.

“Of course, the other night sparked the conversation, but it was an important conversation that had to be had. Mario and myself have a good understanding now of how we move forward and what it looks like.

“We’ve spoken a lot this week – me, Mario and some of the other senior players. What happened after the game can’t happen.

“We all understand emotions can rise, that we’re in a tough moment and everyone’s fighting and giving everything under big stress and pressure. But they’re scenes we won’t see again, definitely.”

O’Neil added: “These things – sometimes they can be tough to deal with and sometimes you can come out of them in a good spot, and I feel like we have.

“I have a lot of respect for Mario and what he’s still going to be able to do for us. When we get the best out of him on the pitch, his level is so high that he’s still going to play a big part for us.

“He’ll still be around that group of senior players that lead the team, but at this moment we feel it’s best for Nelson to lead the group.”

O’Neil is under pressure as Wolves currently sit in 19th place in the Premier League Standings with just two wins and 10 losses from 15 games.

They will take on Ipswich Town at the Molineux on Saturday afternoon.
