La Liga club Barcelona has confirmed that goalkeeper and captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo a knee surgery on Monday.
Ter Stegen suffered a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee during their 5-1 victory over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Sunday.
The German shot-stopper was carried off on a stretcher after injuring his right knee as he landed awkwardly while catching a cross in the first half.
Barcelona on Monday provided an update on the goalkeeper on the club website. It read: “The Barça goalkeeper will undergo a surgical process on Monday following the knee injury sustained in the game against Villarreal.”
“Tests carried out on the first team player Marc ter Stegen confirm that he has a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee.”

This season the Barça captain has started every game. His appearance against Villarreal was his 289th in a blaugrana shirt and took him past legendary blaugrana keeper Antoni Ramallets into third place on the all-time list of appearances for goalkeepers.
The 32-year-old made his 289th appearance for the Catalan club against Villarreal since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014. He surpassed Antoni Ramallets to become the third-highest in appearances as a Barca goalkeeper.
Ter Stegen featured in two Nations League matches for Germany in September after Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer retired from international duty in August.
Barcelona sits atop the La Liga standings with 18 points, four more than Real Madrid in second place. They will host Getafe next on Wednesday.
