Manchester United have been dealt a fresh injury blow as defender Luke Shaw is expected to be out for weeks with a muscle injury, Afrosport reports.
The England international, who returned to action for the Red Devils at Ipswich Town last month, missed the remainder of last season and the start of this season with a calf injury and has managed only three substitute appearances under new boss Ruben Amorim.
Shaw, who made the announcement on social media on Wednesday, says he is “devastated” after suffering another injury setback.
The United No. 23, in an emotional statement on his Instagram story, wrote: “It’s hurting a lot having to write this as I really thought I had got through my recent struggles and was on a positive path going forwards, but unfortunately I’ve had a small setback.
“I’ve been through a lot and had a lot of ups and downs but this has definitely been my toughest period. I’m absolutely devastated and it’s extremely tough to come to terms with reality at this moment in time.
“I understand there is [going to] be people frustrated, angry, disappointed and I understand all that. There is no one feeling that more than me at this moment in time.
“But what I can promise is I will do everything I can to come back better soon to help this club achieve its ambitions this season. Thank you to everyone for the support. It really doesn’t go unnoticed and I really do appreciate it.”
Since his big-money move to United from Southampton as a teenager in 2014, Shaw has been hit with multiple injuries, including a devastating double leg fracture in September 2015.
Before United’s 1-1 draw against Ipswich at Portman Road, Shaw last played for the Old Trafford club in February. He also came on as a substitute in their 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, as well as in Saturday’s 4-0 thumping of Everton.
The 29-year-old’s injury provides a new headache for Amorim, whose United side are up against in-form Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
The 20-time English champions, who are already thin in defence, will be without Shaw for the trip to North London as well as the duo of Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo due to yellow card accumulation.
