Manchester United have handed their newest acquisition Mason Mount the iconic No. 7 jersey, the 13-time Premier League winners revealed on Wednesday.
Earlier today, the Red Devils announced the signing of the 24-year-old English midfielder from Chelsea on a five-year deal worth around £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons, with an option for a further year.
Mount joins a long list of United greats like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo who have also donned the iconic jersey.
The attacking midfielder, who sent a heartfelt message to Chelsea fans through social media on Tuesday evening, is United’s first signing of the season, and he joins the Old Trafford outfit after weeks of discussions between both teams.
Despite rumors of Argentine youngster Alejandro Garnacho being given the jersey, Mount has been handed the duty of wearing the club’s most significant shirt.
The number is not a strange one for Mount, as he had previously worn it during his time in Chelsea’s Under-23s and for England, but the upcoming 2023–24 season will be the first time the Englishman has worn it in senior club football.
He will become the latest United player to wear it in the Premier League era, after Cristiano Ronaldo occupied the shirt during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, continuing from when he did the same from 2003 to 2009.
Also, Michael Owen (2009–12), former captain Antonio Valencia (2012–13), Angel Di Maria (2014–15), Memphis Depay (2015–17), Alexis Sanchez (2017–20), and Edinson Cavani (2020–21) all wore no. 7 for United at some point in their United careers.
Mount is expected to bring another creative and attacking spark to Erik Ten Hag’s side, and he is ready to join the team for the pre-season training sessions.
