Man City edge Bournemouth to boost UCL hopes as De Bruyne bids Etihad farewell

Manchester City secured a 3-1 win over Bournemouth to get back to winning ways on Tuesday as Belgian midfielder Kevin Bruyne played his final game at the Etihad Stadium, Afrosport reports.

Fresh from their FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace, City needed a win to boost their chances of securing Champions League football next season, and goals from Omar Marmoush, Bernardo Silva, and Nico Gonzalez helped them seal the victory and move into third in the league standings.

Marmoush opened the scoring for City in the 14th minute, firing a 30-yard wonder strike into the top corner for his seventh league goal since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt in January.

De Bruyne came close to finding the back of the net in his final home game for the club as the Belgian hit the bar from close range. Bournemouth came close to levelling the scores but Evanilson’s effort ricocheted off the far post.

City, however, doubled their lead eight minutes after the half-hour mark through Silva, who swept the ball home from an Ilkay Gundogan cut-back.

Bournemouth were handed a lifeline with plenty of time on the clock as Mateo Kovacic was shown a red card for a foul on Evanilson in the 67th minute. The Cherries did not make their advantage count, as Lewis Cook also received his marching orders seven minutes later, with both teams down to 10 men.

Spain midfielder and Ballon d’Or winner Rodri made his long-awaited return after eight months out, coming on for Erling Haaland in the 83rd minute, but it was another substitute, Gonzalez, on for De Bruyne, who scored City’s third with his curling effort.

The Cherries drew one back later on through Daniel Jebbison, but it proved to just be a consolation as Pep Guardiola’s side held on for their fifth straight home win in the Premier League.

City now sits third in the league standings with 68 points, two more than sixth-placed Aston Villa heading into Sunday’s final round of matches.
