Man City boss Guardiola hails Kyle Walker’s impressive genetics

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hailed English fullback Kyle Walker for his impressive ‘genetics’ after their 3-1 win at the Olympic Stadium over West Ham United at the weekend.

The former Barcelona manager praised the 33-year-old England international, who recently signed a new two-year contract extension until 2026 with the treble winners, for his impressive performances thus far this season.

Walker, who has captained City in their last few games in the absence of the injured Kevin de Bruyne, was praised by Guardiola for being handed good genetics from his parents, which has helped his physicality and longevity at the top.

“I would say I’m not surprised because I have known him for seven years,” The Spaniard said. “But I have to admit that when he is stable and happy and whatever it is, he has the ability.

“His mum and dad gave him some genetics that our mum and dad didn’t give to us. So, this is the reality.

“And he’s really well and every time he is a better player, understand better the game, with the ball is much better. So, all the aspects, is really, really good.”

Walker is currently one of City’s longest serving players having spent the last six to seven years at the Etihad outfit. He joined the side in 2017 from Tottenham Hotspur alongside Bernardo Silva (Monaco), and Guardiola praised the two players impact on the team.

“Losing Kyle [Walker] and Bernardo [Silva] would have been so tough,” Guardiola added. “It is not about how important they are on the pitch.

“They are important figures, they are personalities. And there are many things that are almost, you know, irreplaceable for many aspects.”

Walker and Manchester City have started the season really well with a perfect record in the Premier League, winning their first five games.
