Luton’s Elijah Adebayo announces desire to represent Nigeria

Luton Town forward Elijah Adebayo has revealed his desire to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The 26-year-old was born in England to Nigerian parents, making him eligible to play for the three-time African champions.

Adebayo reiterated his wish to suit up for the Super Eagles during an interview in Sky Sports “What’s in the hat show” trending on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

“Heritage is big for me obviously,” he said. “My mum, she was born in Nigeria, she came here and although I’ve been to Nigeria when I was young, I am also looking to go again. Grandma lives in Nigeria.

“The Heritage is there and I am proud to be Nigerian, and I would love to play for Nigeria. My mum would be very very proud to see me play for Nigeria as well. It’s special.”

Adebayo, who helped Luton secure promotion to the Premier League for the first time since the 1991–92 season, has scored nine goals in 23 league matches for the Hatters this season.

The 6-foot-4 forward is one of three players of Nigerian descent in the ranks at Luton, and he would be following in the footsteps of center back Gabriel Osho, who was recently called up to the Super Eagles squad but eventually withdrew due to injury.
