Liverpool boss Slot offers positive update on Isak fitness

Liverpool manager Arne Slot revealed that Alexander Isak is in the final stages of rehabilitation from a fractured leg and could return by the end of March, Afrosport reports.

The 26-year-old Swedish striker of Eritrean heritage has been sidelined since December when he fractured a bone in his lower leg and needed ankle surgery after a tackle from Micky van de Ven in the 2-1 Premier League win away at Tottenham Hotspur.

It was a further setback in Isak’s quest to integrate into the Liverpool squad since his British record £125 million signing from Newcastle United last summer.

“Alex has been on the pitch, not with his football boots but with his running shoes for the first time this week,” Slot said.

“The next step is doing work with the ball, which every player likes most, then the next step is to come into the group and then it takes a while before you’re ready to play.

“It will be some time around there, end of March, start of April, where he is hopefully back with the group. That is not to say you are ready to play, let alone start a game.

“But it’s nice that rehab goes well; that’s a compliment to him and our medical staff.

“I think we all know the moment you go on the pitch it doesn’t take three months but these final stages of rehab can also make it change.”

Isak has scored three goals in 16 competitive games this season. He is one of six Liverpool first-team players currently sidelined due to injury, the others being Giovanni Leoni, Wataru Endo, Conor Bradley and Stefan Bajcetic, all long term while Jeremie Frimpong is close to a return.

Liverpool are in sixth place on the Premier League table, three points away from the top four and will travel to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
