Liverpool have been handed a fresh injury blow in their Premier League title as defender Joe Gomez has been ruled out for weeks with a hamstring injury, manager Arne Slot said on Tuesday.
Gomez has been out of action since the beginning of the New Year with a hamstring injury but returned to action in Liverpool’s 1-0 loss at Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup fourth round.
The 26-year-old played only 11 minutes at Home Park Stadium, having picked up a fresh injury and was replaced by young defender Isaac Mabaya.
“Joe [Gomez] will take quite a long time,” said Slot ahead of their Premier League game against Aston Villa on Wednesday. “He’s going to be out for numerous weeks because of a hamstring injury.
Slot, who also hinted that Gomez could be out till towards the end of the season, added, “We expect him to be back at the end phase of the season.”
“He worked really hard to come back. First game when he came back, after two or three minutes we saw him making a sprint, and now he’s out for weeks again. That’s always very hard for a player.”

The Reds head to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa in a midweek clash and Slot says he is expecting a tough battle against Unai Emery’s side, who are ninth in the league standings.
“They qualified for top eight in the Champions League, so that tells you it’s strong team we’re going to face,” he said.
“Again, a difficult game for us, for everyone. They have a great home record… that is going to be a challenge, but we have an okay away record as well this season.”
