Ligue 1: Terem Moffi’s brilliance fires Nice past PSG

Super Eagles forward Terem Moffi was the hero for OGC Nice as they defeated defending champions Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 at the Parc des Princes on Friday night.

The Nigerian kicked off matchday 5 in Ligue 1 with a brace and an assist to help Les Aiglons to a famous victory away from home and continue their unbeaten run to the new season.

Moffi opened the scoring for Nice in the 21st minute after French forward Kylian Mbappe lost the ball in a dangerous area. The 24-year-old’s effort settles into the bottom-right corner, beating Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal for PSG.

Mbappe atoned for his errors as he grabbed the equalizer for the home team eight minutes later. The former Monaco forward’s shot from an Achraf Hakimi pass was too hot to handle for goalkeeper Marcin Bulka.

Both sides kept going back and forth with a number of missed chances to wrap up an intriguing first half. However, Gaetan Laborde restored Nice’s lead eight minutes after the second-half restart, with Moffi providing the assist. The Nigerian showed nice composure to beat Danilo Pereira before sending a cross into the box for Laborde to easily tap in.

Moffi and Laborde combined once more for his second of the game. The former Lorient forward got the ball on the right flank and still had enough work to do. He chopped into his left foot, beating two PSG defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom corner past the stretching Donnarumma.

Despite Mbappe reducing the deficit again with another sublime strike off a well-struck volley for his seventh league goal in four matches, the away side held on to record their first win at the Parc des Princes since 2009.

Moffi’s brace took his tally for the season to three goals along with two assists in five league games, and Nice moves into second place with nine points in the Ligue 1 standings.
