Strasbourg continued their impressive run of form in the French Ligue 1 as they defeated Olympique Lyon 4-2 on Friday night to move into the European qualification places, Afrosport reports.
After a goalless first half, Liam Rosenior’s men got things off in the second half at Stade de la Meinau with Chelsea loanee Andrey Santos finding the back of the net in the 55th minute.
Dilane Bakwa, of Congolese heritage, made it 2-0 on the hour mark after he was set up by Ivory Coast defender Guela Doue.
Lyon got one back through Corentin Tolisso in the 62nd minute but Strasbourg extended their lead in the 73rd minute via Emmanuel Emegha who is of Nigerian and Togolese heritage.
Southampton loanee Samuel Amo-Ameyaw, of Ghanaian heritage, scored his first Strasbourg goal in the 89th minute while Georgia forward Georges Mikautadze scored the second consolation for Lyon from the penalty spot in added time.
The result saw Strasbourg move above Lyon on the table to fifth which is an Europa League spot. They are however just three points shy of second-placed Olympique Marseille who occupy an automatic Champions League place.
Speaking after the victory head coach Rosenior said: “We haven’t accomplished anything yet. It’s good to be where we are, but it’s nothing to be one point off the podium right now. We have to stay humble and keep working hard.
“At halftime, we sat down and I raised my voice a little. Lyon were ahead on every ball and more aggressive. We were far from our best. All I asked of them was to get back on the pitch and play like they usually do, and they did the job.”
