Ligue 1: How Nigeria’s Akor Adams made history with Montpellier

Akor Adams announced himself in the French Ligue 1 when he netted a brace in a 2-2 draw between Montpellier and Le Harve.

The 23-year-year-old Nigerian is a new signing for La Paillade after joining from Norwegian Lillestrom and was instantly brought into the starting XI.

Though Montpellier fell behind to Gautier Lloris’s goal in just the fifth minute of play, Michel Der Zakarian’s side were able to respond with Adams equalising in the 58th minute with a header from Teji Savanier’s cross. He made it 2-1 a few moments later after latching on to Kiki Kouyate’s pass before making a run into the box from the middle of the pitch, shooting the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

Adams became the first player in the history of Montpellier to score twice on his Ligue 1 debut while his brace was scored in the space of one minute, 42 seconds, the fastest double by a Ligue 1 player since data collection began during the 2006-07 season.

Adams’ career began in his home country with Jamba Football Academy in Kaduna before moving to Sogndal in Norway in 2018 where he spent three years, scoring 16 goals and providing seven assists in 56 apperances.

He moved to Lillestrom last year and improved on his goalscoring, finding the back of the net 28 times in 50 outings, providing seven assists.

Adams was part of the Nigeria U-20 national team at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, featuring in the first two games against Qatar and the United States before sitting out in the final group game against Ukraine and Senegal in the round of 16.
