Barcelona’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has received the 20th Golden Foot award at a star-studded ceremony in Monaco on Wednesday.
The international football award honours an active player over the age of 28 after an online vote by fans and can only be won once.
The 34-year-old enjoyed a brilliant season with German champions Bayern Munich last season, scoring 50 goals in 46 appearances and winning many individual accolades, including a second European Golden Shoe award.
Lewandowski has enjoyed a stellar start to his time in Barcelona, scoring 13 league goals in 14 appearances in La Liga this campaign.
After receiving the award, the striker expressed happiness, adding how proud he feels to receive such an honour.
“I am very happy, I am very proud, and for me, it’s a huge honour to win this golden foot award, because I know that everything I do and what I did,” he said.
“I know how hard I have to work for this, and now I can be proud of myself and also the words that I want, so that has been a lot for me.”
The former Borussia Dortmund target man had his footprint cast before receiving the honor at the Grimaldi Forum.
The Golden Foot Award was created in 2003 and was first awarded to Roberto Baggio.
The award has since then been received by a host of football greats, including Edinson Cavani (2018), Luka Modric (2019), Cristiano Ronaldo (2020), and most recently Egypt’s Mohammed Salah in 2021, the third African to win the award behind Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o.
