Frank Lampard has been appointed Chelsea manager until the end of the season.

It comes almost two years after the 44-year-old was sacked by the club and returns to Stamford Bridge following Graham Potter’s dismissal on Sunday.

Lampard himself was dismissed by Everton in January after a poor string of results and replaced by Sean Dyche.   He will now take over from Bruno Saltor who oversaw Chelsea’s tie with Liverpool on Tuesday which ended 0-0.

Chelsea Chairman and co-owner Todd Boehly stated that Lampard has the characteristics to get Chelsea through to the end of the season while the club continues its search for a permanent manager that reportedly has Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann linked to the club.

“We are delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge,” read a statement on the club website.

“Frank is a Premier League Hall of Famer and a legend at this club. As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season. We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line.

“We have an important game against Wolves on Saturday and then we will turn our attention to our Champions League quarter-final in Madrid next week. We are all going to give Frank our full backing as we aim to get the best possible outcome from all our remaining games.”

Lampard will be tasked with improving Chelsea’s Premier League form as they currently sit in 11th place, 14 points away from the top four.

His first assignment will be away to Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend followed by a crunch UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie against Real Madrid next Wednesday.
