La Liga Roundup: Osasuna move into top four, Girona edge Leganes in seven-goal thriller

Matchday 12 in the Spanish La Liga saw Osasuna temporarily move into fourth position following a hard-fought 1-0 win against Real Valladolid at the Estadio El Sadar in Saturday’s early kick-off, Afrosport reports.

In a well-dominated first half by the hosts, Valladolid defender Luis Perez was awarded a yellow card for his tackle on Ante Budimir, whose initial effort was blocked by Arsenal loanee Karl Hein in the 18th minute.

Following a long VAR check, Vicente Moreno’s side were awarded a penalty from the resulting foul and took the lead in the 19th minute after Budimir converted the spot-kick.

The result temporarily puts Osasuna in the top four with 21 points, as they recorded their sixth win of the season, while Valladolid remain in 19th position with eight points.

Elsewhere, Girona bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to see off Leganes 4-3 in an exhilarating seven-goal thriller at the Estadi Montilivi.

Miguel Gutierrez had opened the scoring for Girona in the 21st minute with a volley that beat Leganes goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic. However, their lead lasted just three minutes before Renato Tapia got the leveller for Leganes as the Peruvian international fired a well-placed shot from outside the box into the bottom corner.

The hosts, however, got in front in the 31st minute with Arnau Martinez’s header, but Juan Cruz leveled again for the visitors with a precise shot from the edge of the box four minutes before halftime to make it 2-2.

Veteran striker Cristhian Stuani came off the bench in the second half to score a penalty with his first touch to make it 3-2 for the White and Reds after Matija Nastasic fouled Bojan Miovski.

With about 20 minutes left to play, Sergio Gonzalez’s own goal in the 73rd minute made it 4-2 to Girona, while Munir El Haddadi pulled one back for Leganes four minutes later, which turned out to be the last roll of the dice from both sides.

Girona now sit 10th in the La Liga standings with 15 points, while Leganes are five places below with 11 points.
