Nicolas Jackson scored as Villareal ended their 2022-23 La Liga season with a 2-2 draw at home to Atletico Madrid on Sunday.
The Yellow Submarines were guaranteed of finishing in fifth place regardless of what they played at the Estado de la Ceramica. There was also no hope of them making the top four as Real Sociedad enjoyed a four-point lead going into the final round of games.
Jackson was awarded the La Liga Player of the Month for May before the game, with five goals and two assists prior to his name. The Senegal international got things off in front of home support one last time in the ninth minute with a fine strike that left Atletico goalkeeper Ivo Grbic helpless.

Atletico Madrid responded with Argentine forward Angel Correa finding the back of the net in the 18th and 56th minute, both goals assisted by Frenchman Antoine Griezmann.
The Spanish capital outfit’s day turned sour as veteran Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel was shown a straight red card in the 70th minute for stopping a clear goalscoring opportunity. It allowed Villarreal to get back into the game which they did, Jorge Pascual netting the equaliser deep in injury time.

For Jackson, he ends the La Liga season with 12 goals in 26 appearances coupled with four assists.
The 21-year-old is currently on loan from Serie A side Salernitana but is expected to permanently move to Spain once the deal expires at the end of June.
