Kobbie Mainoo: Man Utd teenager called up to England’s senior squad

Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo is the latest youngster to be called up to the England national team set-up.

The 18-year-old, who was initially invited to the Under-21 squad led by Lee Carsley, has now been handed the opportunity to make his senior team bow by Three Lions head coach Gareth Southgate.

The United academy graduate was brilliant in their 4-3 win against Liverpool at Old Trafford in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday, and although he was substituted in the 80th minute, the teenager received huge applause from the home fans, acknowledging his impact.

He made his senior debut for the Red Devils in the Carabao Cup in January 2023, before coming in as a substitute in February 2023 for his Premier League debut. He has been a regular for Erik Ten Hag’s men this season, with two goals and two assists in 23 matches across all competitions since recovering from an injury he suffered in pre-season.

Mainoo, who is of Ghanaian descent, has previously represented England in the U17 and U19 categories.

He joined up with the senior team along with the players in the initial 25-man invited squad, at their training base at St. George’s Park on Tuesday.

England will take on Brazil on Saturday, March 23, before facing Belgium on Tuesday, March 26, with both matches slated to take place at Wembley Stadium.
