Keith Andrews replaces Thomas Frank as new Brentford head coach

Brentford have appointed Keith Andrews as their new manager, replacing Thomas Frank, who left for Tottenham Hotspur, Afrosport reports.

The 44-year-old former Ireland international has been handed the first managerial role of his career, having served as set-piece coach with the Bees since last summer.

Andrews began his coaching career as assistant manager at MK Dons before joining the Ireland Under-21 national team as assistant coach to Stephen Kenny.

He then became an assistant for the Irish senior team in 2020 after Kenny was promoted as head coach.

Andrews then joined Sheffield United as part of Chris Wolder’s backroom staff before leaving to join Brentford.

“Keith is a very good fit,” Brentford director of football Phil Giles told the club website.

“He gets on with everyone, he’s very open, and he’s a learner. Keith is clear in what he wants, he’s detailed, and the players and staff like and respect him.

“He understands the players in the building and the way we’ve played and trained under Thomas Frank.

“Keith will bring his own evolution but isn’t starting from scratch, so hopefully we can make some quick progress.

“He’s a very good coach and has clear ideas about how he wants the team to improve. We were looking for somebody not just to maintain what we’ve been doing but actually try and get better.”

His appointment continues the trend of Brentford taking coaches from within the team rather than appointing from outside.

Frank was promoted as head coach in 2018 after he was an assistant to Dean Smith, who left to take charge of Aston Villa.

Andrews will take charge of things at the Gtech Community Stadium dugout after Caoimhin Kelleher was signed from Liverpool as a replacement for Mark Flekken, who moved to Bayer Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, Christian Norgaard is on the verge of joining Arsenal, while Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.
