Inter part ways with Inzaghi after Champions League final defeat

Inter Milan have parted ways with manager Simone Inzaghi by “mutual agreement” following their historic defeat in the Champions League final, Afrosport reports.

Inzaghi joined Inter from Lazio in 2021 and departs the club following their 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in Munich on Sunday.

“Dear Nerazzurri family,” he wrote. “The time has come for me to say goodbye to this Club after a four-year journey, during which I gave my all.

“Every day I dedicated my first and last thought of the day to Inter. I was reciprocated with professionalism and passion by the players, managers and every single employee of the club.

“I want to dedicate a final word to the millions of Nerazzurri fans who cheered me on, cried and suffered in difficult moments and laughed and celebrated in the six triumphs we experienced together.

“I will never forget you.”

The 49-year-old, who is close to securing a move to coach Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, announced his departure after a meeting with Inter’s hierarchy on Tuesday.

“The club and Simone Inzaghi are parting ways,” an Inter Milan statement read. “This is the decision taken by mutual agreement.”

Giuseppe Marotta, Inter President, added: “On behalf of our shareholder Oaktree and the entire Club, I would like to thank Simone Inzaghi for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today’s discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths. Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day can we have a frank dialogue like the one that occurred today.”

Inzaghi won six titles at Inter: one Serie A, two Coppa Italia trophies and the Supercoppa Italia three times. The Nerazzurri missed out on defending their Serie A title, missing out to Napoli by one point in the 2024-25 season.

He also led Inter to two Champions League finals, but they lost 1-0 to Manchester City in 2023 and Sunday’s 5-0 defeat against PSG.

Inter are one of the 32 teams participating in the newly expanded Club World Cup set to take place in the United States from 14 June to 13 July.

The Nerazzurri are drawn in Group E along with River Plate, Urawa Reds and Monterrey, who they will face in their opening game on Wednesday, 18 June.
