Ghana new head coach Chris Hughton says he will do everything possible to make the Black Stars successful again.
The 64-year-old was officially unveiled as the national team coach in Kumasi on Monday ahead of the Black Stars’ 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola in the same city on Thursday.
Hughton – who has a contract in place until December 2024 – previously held the role of technical adviser while Otto-Addo was in charge of the senior team. However, after Ghana’s failure to qualify from Group H at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Addo was relieved of his duties.
Hughton’s first task will be to get Ghana through to the 2023 AFCON tournament proper in the Ivory Coast, and he has called for the support of the fans ahead of Thursday’s clash with Angola.
“To represent Ghana and the Black Stars as the head coach is something I am incredibly proud of. It’s something I’ll give everything to make the team as successful as possible,” Hughton said at his unveiling.
“I’ll give everything to make sure the communication and relationship I have with this association and the supporters
“Our game is about support – from the association, but mostly, the support from the huge array of fans we have and that starts with a very difficult game at Kumasi on Thursday.”

Ghana are four-time AFCON champions but last tasted success in 1982 when they defeated hosts Libya on penalties. The closest they have come was in 2015 when they lost to the Ivory Coast on penalties.
For Hughton, this will be his second managerial stint in international football having held the role of assistant manager with the Republic of Ireland between 2003 and 2005. At club level, he notably managed Newcastle United, Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion.
