Haller’s double sends Dortmund to Bundesliga summit

Ivory Coast striker Sebastien Haller bagged a brace in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Ausburg to help them move above Bayern Munich to the top of the German Bundesliga table.

Following a goalless first half, Haller broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. The Ivorian star pounced on a missed clearance and slotted a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner to put his side ahead.

The former Ajax forward doubled his tally in the 84th minute with another close-range finish. Julian Brandt played Marco Reus in, but the German’s strike was parried by goalkeeper Tomas Koubek into the path of Haller, who kicked the ball into an empty net.

Dortmund’s third goal came late in the game with a confident finish from Brandt three minutes after regulation time. Nico Schlotterbeck’s well-weighted pass was finished off by Brandt’s leg and foot.

Haller’s brace takes his tally for the season to nine goals and five assists in 18 league games.

Edin Terzic’s side moved to the summit of the league with two points above defending champions Bayern.

They are currently on 70 points and will face Mainz at Signal Iduna Park next weekend, knowing that a win will secure their first title in 11 years.
