Haller’s double lifts Dortmund to top of Bundesliga

Ivory Coast international Sebastien Haller was back among the goals as Borussia Dortmund thrashed FC Cologne 6-1 at the Signal Iduna Park on Saturday.

The 28-year-old scored a brace to end his seven-game drought. taking his tally in all competitions to three goals in 13 matches since making a full recovery from testicular cancer earlier this year.

 

Portuguese fullback Raphael Guerreiro opened the scoring for the home side inside 15 minutes after fine work down the right by Dutch forward Donyell Malen. Two minutes later, Guerreiro turned provided for Haller, with the former Ajax forward finishing off a fine team move with an emphatic left-footed strike.

Dortmund captain Marco Reus scored the first of his brace just after the half-hour mark with a sublime finish after being teed up by Guerreiro, who put up an impressive display.

Malen made it four for the eight-time German champions with a ferocious strike from inside the box that Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwabe could only parry into his own net. German striker Davie Selke pulled one back for the away team in the 42nd minute, following up his own rebound, after a mistake from BVB goalkeeper Alexander Meyer.

 

Haller doubled his tally for the match in the 69th minute, tucking in from close range after Mahmoud Dahoud’s stunning freekick was saved by Schwabe.

Reus then got his sixth league goal of the season and the 150th of his Bundesliga career with an emphatic right-footed finish on the 70-minute mark to complete Dortmund’s rampaging performance.

The win took their point tally for the season to 53 as they leapfrogged reigning champions Bayern Munich into the top spot in the German top flight, with the Bavarians travelling to the Bay Arena to tackle Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.
