Glasgow confirmed as Commonwealth Games host with events reduced to 10 sports

Commonwealth Games Federation has confirmed Glasgow as the official host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the ten sports from July 23 to August 2 2026.

The Australian state of Victoria pulled out of its planned staging of the multi-sport event last year, citing rising costs which was projected at more than A$6 billion (£3.13 billion, USD4.09 billion).

But the Scottish government said on Tuesday that the 2014 hosts – Glasgow who will stage the event next year, across four venues projected more than £100 million ($130 million) of inward investment into the city and a support of over £150 million of economic value added for the region.

The Chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Katie Sadleir, noted that a number of factors, including “universality of participation and quality of competition” as well as local appeal were considered when deciding what sports to include.

“The Games promise to be a truly immersive festival of sport and celebration of culture and diversity that inspires athletes and sports – with a fan experience more accessible than ever before,” Sadleir said

“‘With the reassuring legacy of Glasgow 2014 providing existing sporting, transport and accommodation infrastructure, and world-class venues and expertise, we look forward to working with the Glasgow team to deliver a very special Commonwealth Games in 2026.”

The event will also feature fully integrated para-competitions across six of the selected sports as a key priority and point of difference for the Games.

The upcoming edition will feature just 10 sports which include’s athletics and para athletics (track and field), swimming and para swimming, artistic gymnastics, track Cycling and para track cycling, netball, weightlifting and para powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and para bowls, as well as 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.

The Commonwealth Games, being held every four years, evolved out of the British Empire Games and is still composed mainly of countries once subject to British imperial rule.
