Ghana star Atsu found dead after Turkey earthquake

Ghana international Christian Atsu has been confirmed dead after almost two weeks of being trapped in the rubble of the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6.

The 31-year-old’s body was found under the debris of his home in the city of Hatay on Saturday, as confirmed by his agent Nana Sechere on social media.

Sechere expressed his sadness at the news and implored everyone to respect the family’s privacy.

The statement said:”It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well-wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning.

“My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.

“I ask that whilst we make the necessary arrangements, that everyone would please respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time.”

Before his untimely demise, Atsu plied his trade with Super Lig side Hatayspor and was initially reported trapped under the rubble along with club sporting director Taner Savut, a day after opening his account with the Turkish club in a game against Kasimpasa.

However, the Black Stars winger was rumoured to have been found and was said to be hospitalised with a fracture and breathing difficulties, but the news turned out to be untrue.

The 65-time capped Ghana international had spells at Chelsea, Newcastle, Everton, FC Porto, Vitesse, and most recently Al Raed in Saudi Arabia, before joining Hatayspor last summer.

According to Al-Jazeera, over 45,000 people have been prononced dead following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks in southern Turkey and northern Syria.
