Ghana-born Mohammed Muntari became the first player to score for Qatar on the World Cup stage after netting a consolation goal in their 3-1 defeat to Senegal on Friday.
Muntari was introduced as a 74th-minute substitute and four minutes later, he turned Ismaeel Mohammad’s cross to the back of the net with his header.
Muntari was born in the city of Kumasi in the early 90s and he grew up in the West African country, playing for Golden Lions Soccer Academy before travelling to Qatar where he became a neutralised citizen.
The 28-year-old made his debut for Qatar in December 2014 and he scored his maiden international goal in the same fixture against Estonia.
Muntari currently plies his trade in his home country with Al Ahli.
His goalscoring contribution at the Al Thumama Stadium was not enough as Boulaye Dia, Famara Diedhiou and Bamba Dieng fired Senegal to a 3-1 win.
Qatar have now lost back-to-back games at the World Cup after an opening day defeat to Ecuador. Their final Group A fixture is against the Netherlands on Tuesday.
