Genk president warns Arokodare will not be sold cheap like Onuachu

Genk president Peter Croonen says the club will not sell Tolu Arokodare cheaply despite interest from some top European clubs, Afrosport reports.

The Super Eagles forward has emerged as a target for German Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich after ending the Belgian Pro League season as top joint scorer with 21 goals in 40 games.

Should Arokodare be sold, he will be the second Nigerian to leave Genk in recent times after Paul Onuachu departed for Southampton for a reported €18 million in January 2023.

Croonen also emphasised that Genk are not under pressure to sell the Festac Town-born player.

“An amount like with Onuachu? Let me say that I don’t want to say much about that, but we want much more,” he said per Voetbalprimeur.

“There is always pressure to sell, in every football club that wants to function autonomously.

“With a European ticket, there is more play, but of course, we have our own reserves. As a result, we can decide when we sell.”

Meanwhile, retired Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld called Arokodare one of the best players in Belgium, recounting when they faced each other last season.

“There are also players who did the opposite. Tolu [Arokodare], for example, great guy,” he stated per Voetbalkrant.

“He came to me during the match: ‘Toby, I’m a big fan. You hurt us a lot last season.’ I also sincerely think he is one of the best strikers in Belgium, and I don’t say that because I have to.”

Arokodare featured for Nigeria in the Unity Cup final over Jamaica at the weekend and is part of the squad that will face Russia in a friendly in Moscow on Friday.
