Gasperini named new AS Roma boss as Juric takes over at Atalanta

Gian Piero Gasperini has been appointed as the new manager of AS Roma on a three-year contract, while former Southampton boss Ivan Juric takes his place at Atalanta, Afrosport reports.

Gasperini left the Gewiss Stadium on Friday after nine years in charge, and will replace, Claudio Ranieri, who came out of retirement to lead the Giallorossi to a fifth place finish in the Serie A and qualify for next season’s Europa League.

Gasperini turned Atalanta from Serie A strugglers to regular European football participants, which culminated in winning the Europa League last year, their first-ever European trophy, thanks to Ademola Lookman’s hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.

“AS Roma announces the appointment of Gian Piero Gasperini as the Club’s new Head Coach,” read a club statement.

“Gasperini’s career is defined by its creative tactics, dedication to hard work, and exceptional player development.

“Both ownership and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission. Welcome to the Club Mister!”

Meanwhile, Juric takes over from Gasperini in Bergamo on a two-year deal. The Croatian returns to Italy after failing to keep Southampton in the Premier League last term.

Both men have a close relationship, with Juric playing under Gasperini at Crotone and Genoa between 2003 and 2010 before forming part of the 67-year-old Italian’s backroom staff at Inter Milan and Palermo in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Juric then replaced Gasperini at Genoa when he left in 2016 to join Atalanta. The 49-year-old went on to manage Hellas Verona and Torino before his stint with Southampton.
