Galatasaray suffer blow as Osimhen misses Champions League trip to Germany

UCL: Osimhen’s Galatasaray to face Man City, Liverpool in league phase

Galatasaray will be without Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen for their Champions League opener against Eintracht Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank Park on Thursday, Afrosport reports.

The 26-year-old was left out of the 23-man travelling squad to Germany after missing Tuesday’s final training session at the Florya Metin Oktay facilities.

Osimhen picked up an ankle injury on 6 September while on international duty for Nigeria, forcing him to miss their crucial World Cup qualifier against South Africa in Bloemfontein just three days after featuring in the 1–0 win over Rwanda.

On his return to Turkey, scans confirmed an ankle sprain which also ruled him out of Galatasaray’s 2–0 Super Lig victory at Eyupspor on Saturday.

His absence is a major setback for Okan Buruk’s side, with Osimhen having scored twice in three appearances this season and boasting a strong record against Frankfurt, netting three times against the German outfit in previous European meetings.

Nonetheless, Galatasaray, who have won all five of their matches this season, will look to lean on the experience of Mauro Icardi, Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gundogan as they aim to start their European campaign on a high.
