French forward Antoine Griezmann has announced his retirement from international football, Afrosport reports.
The 33-year-old, played 137 times for France, scoring 44 goals and providing 38 assists for Les Bleus since he made his debut in a friendly match against the Netherlands in 2014.
Griezmann, who scored a penalty in the 2018 FIFA World Cup final as France beat Croatia 4-2 to win the title, announced the news of his retirement with a video on his social media on Monday.
He said: “It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent tricolour adventure and see you soon.”
“After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation.
“Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege.”
The left-footed maestro was top scorer at Euro 2016 with six goals as hosts France finished runners-up, losing to Portugal in the final. He also won the 2021 UEFA Nations League with France beating Spain 2-1 at the San Siro.
The Atletico Madrid forward recently played for Les Blues in a 3-1 Nations League defeat to Italy in September, before making his last appearance as a substitute in a 2-0 win against Belgium three days later.
With the October international break just a week away, Griezmann announced his decision to quit his international career with France set to face Israel and Belgium in the Nations League.
Griezmann also played in the 2022 World Cup final when France lost on penalties to Argentina after a thrilling 3-3 draw.
