Former Zambia star Mwepu appointed as Brighton U-19 coach

Brighton & Hove Albion have announced the appointment of Enock Mwepu as manager of their Under-19 side.

The Zambian’s career came up to an abrupt end in October 2022 after he was diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition at the age of 24.

Brighton promised to integrate Mwepu into the club’s structure and he will now take charge of the Seagulls’ Under-19s starting from the New Year.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi was pleased for the next chapter of Mwepu.

He said: “We’re really happy that Enock has decided to remain here at our club and use his experience to help develop our young players.

“Considering his age, Enock has a wealth of experience. He has played in the Champions League and Premier League as well as captaining his country. This is the next chapter for Enock in his footballing career.”

Mwepu began his career in Zambia with Napsa Stars and Kafue Celtic FC. He then moved to Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg in 2017, featuring 119 times, scoring 18 goals and providing 20 assists. before moving to the Premier League for the 2021-22 season.

During his brief stint in the English top-flight, Mwepu made a total of 27 appearances along with 10 goal contributions (3 goals, 7 assists).

He was also captain of the Zambia national team, making 23 appearances between 2017 and 2022, with six international goals to his name.
