Germany’s 1986 World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus has bought a majority stake in Ghanaian Premier League club, Accra Lions.

The deal is in partnership with Ghana star Frank Acheampong who plies his trade in the Chinese Super League with Shenzhen FC and renowned German football agent, Oliver Konig.

Matthaus’ investment in Ghana football was announced on Tuesday in Accra, in an event that had in attendance the President of Ghana Football Association, Kurt Oktraku, General Secretary of Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), Anthony Baffoe and Accra Lions’ management.

Konig and Matthaus were also present at the event with the former aiming to develop football talents in Ghana with an eye in chasing career in Europe.

“We want to bring young players to Europe in a serious way and already well-trained. That’s why we’re also investing in the training ground here,” Matthaus was quoted by DW.

“Ghana is a football country and what I saw when training with the kids, they like and love football. I saw many players with good qualities and passion for football and this is the key to making Ghanaian football better in the future.”

Matthaus had a successful football career and led Germany to lift the 1990 FIFA World Cup as captain and he won the Ballon d’Or that same year. A year later, he claimed the first-ever FIFA World Player of the Year.

The Bundesliga ambassador also boasts of the most appearances made for the Germany national team with 150 international matches played between 1980 and 2000.

Accra Lions are currently ninth in the Ghanaian top-flight with nine points behind league leaders, Medeama Sporting Club.

The Accra-based outfit has established its presence in the Premier League since gaining promotion in 2021.
