‘Football is unfair’ – Enrique unhappy with PSG’s UCL home loss to Liverpool

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique is unhappy with his team’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, asserting the game can be unfair, Afrosport reports.

The French capital outfit were the better side for much of the 90 minutes but were undone by substitute Harvey Elliott’s 87th-minute strike.

While Enrique believes his team deserved a better result from how they played, he humbly accepted the defeat.

“This match is not hard to analyse: I think we were superior to Liverpool both in how we played and in the number of chances we had,” the Spaniard said.

“We played a great match against the number one team both in England and in Europe, we defended very well and we took risks. Clearly, we deserved another result, but this is football, it is a sport which is often unfair, and we have to accept it.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Arne Slot says his side were lucky to come off with the win and had goalkeeper Alisson to thank after he made some top saves.

“I think that if we would have had a draw over here, we would have been already the lucky one and, that that is clear for everyone. I think they were the much better team today. Especially in the first half they had a lot of open chances, well three or four big big, big chances,” the Dutchman stated.

“In the second half they were still the better team, still had a lot of shots on target. But they were mainly from outside the box, but I knew before the game and I saw it today again how much quality this team has, and these individual players have.

“So, all these shots from them from outside the box are with a certain speed that you only see with the top players. We have them as well, but you see that with them as well. That’s why Alisson still had to make a lot of big saves.”

The second leg will take place at Anfield next Tuesday with the winner facing either Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the quarter-finals.
