Flying Eagles defeat Ivory Coast in international friendly in Abidjan

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Ivory Coast U-20 team 2-0 in Abidjan, in the first of a two-legged international friendly match, Afrosport reports.

Captain Daniel Bameyi netted the opener from the penalty spot just three minutes into the second-half after forward, Divine Oliseh was brought down in the box.

Oliseh would go on to register his name on the scoresheet with 10 minutes left to play at the Stade Felix Houphet Boigny.

The two teams will clash again of Friday at the same venue, as they test strength ahead of this year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations coming up in April in Ivory Coast.


The hosts have been drawn in group A alongside DR Congo, Ghana, Tanzania and the second flag-bearers from Central Africa, while the Flying Eagles are in Group B alongside Egypt, South Africa and Morocco.

The Flying Eagles have won the U-20 AFCON title on seven occassions and Aliyu Zubairu’s side will be aiming for their eigth title when the tournament gets underway.
