Five Nigeria players likely to move in this summer transfer window

Onuachu’s Southampton opens 2023-24 Championship season against Sheffield Wednesday

The 2023 European summer transfer window has begun with moves already being made in what should be a very busy period for clubs.

Nigerian players are among some of those that will be involved in these deals and  Afrosport takes a look at five of the biggest names that could be on the move this summer.

Kelechi Iheanacho

The 26-year-old witnessed relegation for the first time in his career after Leicester City finished in 18th place last season.

Iheanacho has built a name for himself with top-notch performances that stretch back to his time at Manchester City where his career began. As such, playing in the Championship might not suit his profile and will be looking to get a move away from the King Power Stadium.

Indeed, the Foxes might look to cash out on him this summer with one year left to run on his current contract.

Terem Moffi

Moffi has lit up the French Ligue 1 from the moment he joined Lorient from Belgian side Kortrijk in 2020. After netting 35 goals for Les Merlus, the 24 -year-old, moved to OGC Nice on loan in January and still continued to score, netting nine goals in 20 apperances, ultimately finishing the 2022-23 season with 21 goals in 38 competitive games.

Nice have an obligation to buy Moffi from Lorient for a reported €30 million this summer and while that means he will be settled in the French Riviera, Nice might be tempted to sell him if suitors from bigger European clubs come his way.

Moffi has been linked with clubs such as Manchester United and Atletico Madrid in the past and is currently rumoured to be of interest to Serie A champions Napoli as his countryman Victor Osimhen is also tipped to leave the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona this summer.

Samuel Chukwueze

The flamboyant winger has been developing steadily at Villarreal since he made his senior debut at the Estadio de la Ceramica in 2018.

The 24-year-old’s consistency with the Yellow Submarines has got him constantly linked with a move away from the club. Italian giants AC Milan are rumoured to want Chukwueze’s service and such will be a good move for a player that still has bright years ahead of him.

Wilfred Ndidi

Ndidi like his countryman Iheanacho faced relegation with Leicester City.

The former Genk midfielder has a solid reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League since his arrival in January 2017.

Even though Ndidi’s form dipped during the 2022-23 season, the reputation he has built for himself in the English top flight will keep potential suitors interested as he has just a year left to run on his current deal.

Paul Onuachu

Onuachu moved to Southampton in January after a four-year goal-laden stint with Genk where he scored 85 goals in 134 apperances.

That reputation was expected to improve the Saints’ fortunes but it never did as they finished bottom of the log.

Regardless of the setback and his ineffectiveness on the English south coast, Onuachu still remains a prolific player and could be on the move out of St. Mary’s this summer.

He already has some parties interested in appending his signature, with German Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach reportedly one of them.
