FIFACWC: Inspired Flamengo stun 10-man Chelsea with comeback win

Brazilian club Flamengo came from behind to see off 10-man Chelsea 3-1 in their second group game at the ongoing Club World Cup in the United States on Friday, Afrosport reports.

The Blues went ahead through Portuguese winger Neto but three second half goals ensured Flamengo left the Lincoln Financial Field in Pennsylvania with all available points.

Chelsea came close to opening the scoring in the fifth minute but summer signing Liam Delap failed to beat goalkeeper Agustín Rossi, who was on hand to tip his effort away.

The UEFA Conference League winners eventually broke the deadlock in the 13th minute as Neto found the bottom corner against the run of play after an error from a Flamengo defender.

The Brazilians almost levelled the scoring in the 43rd minute, but Levi Colwill cleared a goal-bound effort off the line, while Gonzalo Plata also forced goalkeeper Robert Sanchez into a great save on the hour mark after the second half restart.

Flamengo looked a changed side in the second period, and they would not be denied for long, as Bruno Henrique drew the Brazilians level in the 62nd minute, tapping the ball home from close range after a well-worked team effort.

Former Manchester City and Juventus defender Danilo completed the turnaround for Flamengo three minutes later, poking the ball home at the far post from a Henrique header.

It went from bad to worse for Chelsea as Senegalese striker Nicholas Jackson, on his 24th birthday, was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle in the 68th minute, just four minutes after coming on for Delap.

Flamengo, meanwhile, made their numerical advantage count, with substitute Wallace Yan netting their third goal of the game, ensuring they claimed their second win in the competition as well as moved into the top spot in the group.

The Brazilian side, coached by former Chelsea left-back Filipe Luis, has progressed to the next round with six points after two games, while Chelsea sit second in Group D with three points.

Flamengo will play Los Angeles FC in their final group game on Tuesday night, while Enzo Maresca’s Blues will tackle Tunisian side ES Tunis on the same day.
