Coventry City have released Sierra Leonean descent defender Fankaty Dabo, three days after he missed a crucial penalty in the Championship play-off final.
Dabo who joined Coventry from Chelsea in 2019, is among the six players leaving the club at the expiry of their contract.
With the score tied at 1-1 and the game in penalty shoot-out, the 27-year-old stepped forward to take the sixth penalty in sudden death but blasted his effort wide off target as Luton Town gained promotion to the Premier League with a 6-5 penalty shoot-out win.
Meanwhile, Coventry City have condemned racist abuses targeted at Dabo since his unfortunate miss at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. The Sky Blues vowed to ban and prosecute any person found guilty of such act.
“The messages sent by some individuals to Fankaty are abhorrent,” the club statement read. “We are clear that there is no place for racism in our society and that the Club and our partners will provide all of support to Fanky that he needs.
“The Club will work with the PFA, EFL and the Police regarding this matter, and will seek to ban and prosecute any person found to have sent racist messages.
“Many Sky Blues supporters sent supportive messages to Fanky following the game and we thank them for doing so.”
