Cesc Fabregas is the top choice to replace Simone Inzaghi as head coach following his departure from the San Siro, Afrosport reports.
The Nerazzurri confirmed that Inzaghi has left the club by mutual consent after four years, having helped them to six titles, including the 2024 Serie A, and also reached the UEFA Champions League final twice.
With the 49-year-old now at Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal, Inter are reviewing their options for the new head coach, with Fabregas the frontrunner.
The Spaniard led Como to an impressive 10th-place finish last season after gaining promotion from Serie B and has won a lot of admirers, including Bayer Leverkusen, who saw him as a replacement for Xabi Alonso, now at Real Madrid, but opted for former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.
According to Football Italia, Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio has met with Fabregas in London to discuss the technical details of the Nerazzurri project.
In a twist of events, Fabregas has come out to say he is committed to seeing the project through with Como.
“…I started with this club because I was thinking about a long-term project. I don’t want to finish my career at a club where there’s a project for one or two years and then everything ends,” he said.
“I really believe in Como’s long-term project. I arrived here as a player, and I’m very, very happy because I get to work in the way that I want. We have the same goals and the same ambition.
“The President allows me to work the way I want, the way I see things. Fortunately, we share the same vision and have the same goal, which is to go as far as possible. We’ve become a really good team together, in a small town, in a small club, but with big, very big ambitions for the future.”
Como President Mirwan Suwarso, has also insisted Fabregas will not leave the club.
“It’s a long journey, it will take several seasons and revolves around Cesc Fabregas, who will not leave the club,” he said.
Genoa coach Patrick Vieira and Parma boss Cristian Chivu, who both featured for Inter in their playing days, are alternative options if a deal for Fabregas does not go through.
Vieira and Chivu both secured survival for Genoa and Parma with respective 13th and 16th place finishes.
