FA Cup: Iheanacho extends record in Leicester City victory

FA Cup: Akpom’s goal not enough as Brighton sink Middlesbrough

Kelechi Iheanacho scored the only goal as Leicester City secured a 1-0 win over Gillingham in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Iheanacho made his first start for the Foxes since a Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion on September and proved to be the difference with his 65th-minute strike.

The effort was his 16th goal in the FA Cup since netting his first in a 3-0 win at Norwich City on January 9, 2016, while featuring for Manchester City. Since then, no other player has scored more goals than the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup champion in the competition.

Iheanacho has played 17 times for Leicester in all competitions this season, scoring just two goals and providing one assist.

Most of his appearances have been off the bench, with Saturday’s match at Gillingham only his third start of the season and the second time he completed 90 minutes this term.

Leicester City’s victory also ended a three-game winless run in the Premier League.

Rodgers’ men sit 13th place in the league table, just two points off the drop zone and will face Newcastle United next in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
