FA Cup: Frimpong, Ekitike score as Liverpool ease past Barnsley

Xabi Alonso leaves Real Madrid after Spanish Super Cup loss

Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike were on target as Liverpool defeated Barnsley 4-1 in final FA Cup third round game on Monday, Afrosport reports.

The Reds played out a goalless draw in their previous game with Arsenal in the Premier League and wasted no time against their League One opponents after Dominik Szoboszlai put them in front in the ninth minute.

Frimpong was the next to register his name on the scoresheet in the 36th minute for his second Liverpool goal since joining last summer from Bayer Leverkusen. It was also his second in a cup competition after netting on his debut against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield last August.

Adam Phillips got one back for Barnsley in the 40th minute but Liverpool continued to search for more goals which came in the closing stages of the game via Florian Wirtz off an assist from the returning Hugo Ekitike, who scored the the final goal with Wirtz assisting.

The victory will see Arne Slot’s side take on Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round after they knocked out 13-time FA Cup champions Manchester United on Saturday.
