F1: Verstappen puts in commanding show from pole to win Italian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen put in a commanding performance from pole position as he won the Italian Grand Prix 19.2 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris, Afrosport reports.

The reigning world champion went off the line in the opening corner at the start of the race in wheel-to-wheel battle with Norris and ceded the lead to his British rival after gaining a lasting advantage.

Verstappen however overtook Norris on lap four and never looked back as he claimed his third win of the season and first since the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in May, ending a nine-race win drought.

The 27-year-old also claimed his third win in the last four races at Monza, and was the first winner from pole position since Charles Leclerc in 2019.

It was his 66th career F1 race win, maintaining third place as the driver with most race wins behind Lewis Hamilton (105) and Michael Schumacher (91), while the race time of one hour, 13 minutes, 24.325 seconds was the fastest in F1 history, beating the previous record of one hour, 14 minutes, 19.838 seconds when Schumacher ironically won at Monza in 2003 for Ferrari.

Piastri finished in third place after he was asked to cede second place to Norris who had a slow pit stop in the closing stages. The Australian now holds a 31-point advantage over his McLaren teammate in the championship standings.

Charles Leclerc finished in fourth place in Scuderia Ferrari’s home race ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell and the second Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton, who started 10th after receiving a five-place grid penalty.

The Williams of Alex Albon finished seventh while Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto, the second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli and Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar completed the top 10.
