Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has confirmed that Racing Bulls duo Liam Lawson or Yuki Tsunoda would be the replacement for Sergio Perez should the Mexican be axed from the team, Afrosport reports.
After claiming four podiums in the first five Grands Prix of 2024, Perez endured a difficult remainder of the season, scoring just 49 points between the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix and the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
This resulted in Red Bull finishing third in the constructors’ championship behind McLaren and Ferrari while Max Verstappen clinched a fourth consecutive title.
Perez signed a two-year contract extension in June but his overall 2024 form has not given any indication he will stay on with crunch talka set to hold between the driver and Red Bull in the post-season
“I think Liam, in challenging circumstances, has done a very good job. If you analyse what he’s done in the time that he’s had and the race pace he’s had, I think he’s done a good job,” Horner said per the F1 website.
“I think Yuki’s done a good job, so in the event that anything were decided with Checo they would be the candidates we would look towards.”
Lawson joined Racing Bulls after the Singapore Grand Prix as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo and was able to have two points finishes with ninth in Austin and Sao Paulo.
Tsunoda meanwhile has been with the Red Bull sister team since 2021 and has 91 career points with a fourth place finish in Abu Dhabi three years ago his result.
