F1: Horner formerly departs Red Bull with £52 million payoff

F1: Christian Horner dismissed as Red Bull team principal after 20 years

Former Red Bull team principal Racing Christian Horner has formally left the Formula 1 team after agreeing a severance worth £52 million, Afrosport reports.

The 51-year-old was relieved of his duties in July after the British Grand Prix, bringing to an end his 20-year reign as the longest-serving team principal in F1 history.

Under Horner’s leadership, Red Bull won eight drivers’ championships and six constructors’ championships.

According to BBC Sport, he had a contract worth 10 million per year until 2030, and his £52 million severance package ranks as one of the highest payouts in sports history.

Laurent Mekies has since replaced Horner, with reigning world champion Max Verstappen taking two wins in the Italian and Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The Austrian team are currently fourth in the constructors’ championship, a massive 351 points behind McLaren, while Verstappen is 69 points behind Oscar Paistri in the drivers’ championship.
