Sir Lewis Hamilton has backed having “peaceful protests” at the British Grand Prix this weekend in the midst of concerns protesters might want to gain entry onto the Silverstone track while the race is going on.
The opening lap of last year’s race saw a number of ‘Just Stop Oil’ protesters take to the track after the race had been red-flagged due to Zhou Guanyu’s scary accident after contact with George Russell.
Other events such as the ongoing Wimbledon tennis championship and the Ashes cricket tournament between England and Australia have already witnessed such protests which needed firm action.
Hamilton is not in support of protesters taking to the track like last year but is in support of peacefully protesting for sustainability and a greener environment which he is a strong advocate for.
“We have not yet spoken to the FIA about what to do,” the seven-time world champion said. “Naturally, we are hoping that we learned from last year, and it won’t happen this year. I believe we have 100 more marshals to make sure it doesn’t happen.
“We are focused on sustainability, we believe in what the people are fighting for and we are making those changes. But safety is key. I support peaceful protests.”
Hamilton’s future at Mercedes has continued to be a hot topic as his contract with the German manufacturer ends this year and has not yet been renewed.
There have been speculations his new deal will be tied to money or an improved car that has lacked pace compared to frontrunners Red Bull since last year. Hamiton however claims that is not the case and is confident the deal will be sorted out.
“No, that’s not what I’m thinking,” he stated. “Before the end of the season, I think we will already be well into the contract.
“I still have 100% faith in this team. It has taken longer for all of us to get to where we want to be.
“It’s definitely not easy but I believe we will get there. We have to continue to chip away at it.
“That’s why we have the upgrade here. We have a front wing here, and more bits at the following races.”
