F1: Chinese Grand Prix ruled out, other races confirmed for 2023

The 2023 Formula 1 season is to stay at 23 races, which officially rules out the possibility of a return or replacement for the Chinese Grand Prix.

The original schedule for the 2023 calendar was set for 24 races, with the event in Shanghai due for April 16, however, strict Covid-19 restrictions in China following a surge in cases meant it was impossible for F1 to go ahead with the race.

The cancellation of the Chinese Grand Prix left a big gap in the calendar with F1 organisers considering adjustments such as Azerbaijan or an additional race being added to the slot such as Portugal, but none materialised.

Chinese authorities also hoped to see its race back on the calendar, but that has now also been ruled out.

“Formula 1 can confirm the 2023 season will consist of 23 races. All existing race dates on the calendar remain unchanged,” read a statement on the  F1 website.

The 2023 F1 season begins in Bahrain on March 5.

This season feature a new race in Las Vegas billed for November 18, making it three races that will take place in the United States after Miami on May 7 and Austin on October 22.
