F1: Chinese Grand Prix eyeing return to 2023 calendar

Ricciardo: McLaren CEO surprised no team approached Red Bull returnee

Organisers of the Chinese Grand Prix have opened talks with Formula 1 for a potential return to the 2023 calendar.

The event was originally pencilled in for April 16 on this year’s calendar, but it was dropped because of the Chinese government’s strict zero COVID-19 policy which was implemented due to the rising cases in the country.

The government is now set to ease those restrictions and organisers want to have the race back in Shanghai which was last held in 2019.

Chinese authorities announced an end to quarantine for travellers coming into the country from January 8, and with no replacement event named, organisers of the Chinese GP see a window of opportunity for a return.

According to Autosport,  the organisers have held internal discussions and made contact with F1.

Should an agreement be reached between both parties and the race restored to its original date, it will be the fourth race of what will be a record 24 races in 2023 and will occur after races in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia.
