Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya has signed an extension to remain on the Formula 1 calendar until 2032, but will host alternate races with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Francochamps, Afrosport reports.

The ‌race which has been known as Spanish Grand Prix since 1991, will now be known as the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand ‌Prix from this season, with the ‌Spanish Grand Prix moving to a new street circuit in the capital city of Madrid.

The Grand Prix will be held next in 2028, 2030 and 2032 by alternating with the Belgian Grand Prix after F1 had announced last January that the race at Spa-Francorchamps would drop off ‌the calendar in 2028 and 2030 as part of a new contract that guarantees four races in six years until 2031.

“Barcelona is an incredible city, and the Formula 1 fans there always welcome us with such passion, so I am delighted that we will continue to race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for years to come.” F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said.

“The team have invested heavily in the circuit and hosted fantastic fan festivals in recent years, so we look forward to seeing how they continue to develop the experience, both for attendees at the race and for the city as a whole…”

This year’s race in Barcelona will take place on June 14 after the Monaco Grand Prix and before the Austrian Grand Prix as part of the June line-up of races.

The F1 paddock is currently in Bahrain for pre-season testing. The second and final test will take place this week before they head to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix on March 8.
